For this performance the musicians have chosen music of Middle Eastern icons - such as the Lebanese and Egyptian singers/composers Abdulwahab, Kolthoum, and Fairouz - and will also play some fusion, jazz, and Western classical pieces.

Musicians

Majd Sekkar (clarinet)

Majd Sekkar is a Syrian clarinetist, and a member of the Canadian Arabic Orchestra. He’s also a clarinet and Arabic music theory teacher at the Canadian Arabic Conservatory.
Majd has performed with famous Arabic Singers on many stages in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Algeria. He moved to Canada in 2016, and immediately began his performance career, playing in many Canadian cities, and also with renowned international and Arabic singers and composers. Majd has given master classes at the University of Toronto and York University on Arabic music theory, and how to incorporate the clarinet in Middle Eastern music. Majd has completed studies in Jazz Performance at Humber College, and continues to collaborate with different local bands.

 

Ayman Mafouz (Oud)

Ayman Mahfouz is an oud player based in Toronto, Canada. He holds a Ph.D from The Academy of Arts in Cairo Egypt. Ayman is a composer and music critic, and taught oriental musicology at Academy of Arts. Ayman is currently teaching oud and the theory of oriental music at Canadian Arab Orchestra in Toronto.

 

Edward Tarzi (guitar)

Edward is a Syrian guitar player based in Toronto, Canada. He earned his Classical Guitar Certificate and Diploma in Aleppo, Syria. He plays various genres and styles of music including Middle Eastern, Western classical, and fusion. He’s currently teaching at the Canadian Arabic Conservatory of Music, and is also a member of the Canadian Arabic Orchestra in Toronto.
